Polyurea
Coats Glass Surface without Prep or Primer
Job
Description: When
you get a few water leaks in old skylights, it can be an annoyance.
But when those windows start falling out, a simple problem becomes
a safety hazard. That was the situation facing the maintenance
crew at the Pontiac East Truck Plant in Detroit, Michigan.
Due
to the location and age of the windows, the glass surfaces had
to be coated without surface preparation. At first, polyurethane
foam was considered. However, this material was rejected because
it required a thermal barrier for interior application. General
Motors officials then steered in the direction of SPI.
Blastech,
the contractor, applied SPI GLASSHIELD-100 AE at a coverage rate
of 1.5 gallons per 100 square feet. Upon request of General Motors,
SPI A102, a single component aliphatic polyurethane, was color-matched
to company standards and sprayed as a topcoat on the exterior.
All
the interior surfaces were coated with an acrylic paint.
Subsequent
to the satisfactory results of this project, General Motors awarded
two similar projects to Blastech in 2000.
With
the ongoing success of previous applications, General Motors gave
Blastech another contract in early 2002.
