Job Description: Jet fueling pits on the tarmac at Anchorage International Airport were sprayed with POLY-SHIELD SS-100™ to prevent spilled fuel from leaking into the ground. The product chosen needed to be resistant to a variety of fuels, as well as being applied over potentially contaminated substrates. The coating would also need to be resistant to the annual freeze thaw cycles and frost heaves, which are common in this part of Alaska.

The translucent yellow POLYSHIELD SS-100™ was chosen to contrast the darker substrate in order to visually determine the thickness of the coating being applied.

The majority of these pits and vaults were completed in 1990 and are continually exposed to water, anti-icing agents and jet fuel. The coating is performing exceptionally well. There is some color change but no breakdown of the coating. Coating was applied over concrete, fabric and directly onto the ground.

Other Coatings Evaluated for Project: Previous to POLYSHIELD SS-100™, a fiberglass sleeve with a rubber boot had been used.
